The Misuse of Prescribed Medicines (Medicines Misuse) application aims to provide up to date information and to foster communication on the subject of misuse of prescribed medicines, particularly in Europe.

Misuse of prescribed medicines in Europe is a subject largely overlooked and under-addressed in policy terms. An agreement has yet to be reached on what misuse encompasses, which medicines it refers to and what the extent of the potential unmet medical need might be. There is no formal record keeping process across countries, for example in the form of a common tracking and reporting tool. There has also been limited common understanding of the language used, when this challenge is being defined and described, in order for it to be addressed.

The application is a first step to an interactive forum on misuse of prescribed medicines in Europe:

- It provides one-touch accessibility to the Policy Review, which constitutes a basis for common understanding of the challenge, and the Glossary of Key Terms and their updates;
- The content of the Glossary is searchable by letter or combination of letters, thus making proper use of terminology easier and widely available;
- Key Policy Resources are hyperlinked and provide access to source documents over the phone or tablet;
- All materials on the application are downloadable for ease of use and review on - and off-line.
The application is an initiative of the Drug, Tobacco and Alcohol Control Department of Lithuania, during the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, July - December 2013.
